For the first time, the Italian Design Days (1

-2
nd of March 2018) are organized in Latvia by the
Embassy of Italy in Riga. The inauguration will take place at the prestigious Riga Motor Museum
(S. Eizenšteina iela

On Friday 2nd of March, Prof Francesco Scullica of the Milan Polytechnic will hold two
Conferences on Italian Design: the first entitled “Interior Design in Hospitality Scenario Through
Italian Approach” will take place at the Riga Technical University (Kaļķu iela 1), at 10:00; the
second entitled “Interior Design: the Italian Way” will take place at the Art Academy of Latvia
(Kalpaka bulvāris 13), at 14:00.
The inauguration, 1st of March
After an opening speech by H. E. Ambassador Sebastiano Fulci, Prof. Francesco Scullica of the
Milan Polytechnic will summarize the highlights of Italian Car Design and introduce Prof.
Zbigniew Maurer, lecturer in Automotive Design at the Master's Degree in Transportation &
Automobile Design of the Milan Polytechnic.
Following the introductory speeches, Prof. Zbigniew Maurer will hold a Conference on Italian Car
Design and his experience with Alfa Romeo Style Center, entitled “Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, the
Protagonist of the Italian School in Automotive Design”.
After the conference, guests will be invited to a cocktail and will have the opportunity to visit the
Riga Motor Museum to admire also fine examples of antique Italian-style cars.

The experts
Prof. Zbigniew Maurer graduated in Architecture
at the University of Toronto in 1987.
Since 1993 he has worked as a senior designer and
project coordinator at the Alfa Romeo Style Center
of Arese, following, among other things, the
complete design of the exterior of the Alfa Romeo
156 Berlina and Sportwagon from the initial
sketches.
He developed the mechanical layout and design of
the Alfa Romeo Diva concept car, also coordinating
the construction of the prototype.
He collaborates with the Historical Museum and Archive of Alfa Romeo.
Since 2013, he has worked as a freelance in the fields of design, graphics, modeling and restoration
of vintage cars.
He is also a lecturer in Automotive Design at the Master's Degree in Transportation & Automobile
Design of the Milan Polytechnic.
Francesco Scullica Architect, Ph.d in Interior Architecture,
is Associate Professor in Industrial Design at Design
Department Politecnico di Milano, and since 2012 he is the
Scientific Director of Master Interior Design- Politecnico di
Milano-POLI.design.
He graduated at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di
Milano with a thesis on the Design of the microenvironment and
the Design for Users with disabilities.
He has participated and participates as visiting professor in
international seminars and activities at some foreign universities,
including the Riga Technical University and the Academy of Art
and Design of Riga.
Since his PhD in Interior Architecture and Furniture, he started to
carry out a research on the tourism / hospitality and design of
Hospitality in relation to interior design field, In particular,
carrying on the research in this activity.
On the hospitality industry he organizes and coordinates training courses and workshops on
specific project, participate in jury awards for the design contract, in meetings, conventions and
exhibitions at trade fairs and international conventions, drawing up specific publications on these
topics, as well as related to the interior design field.
As for his teaching activities, from academic 2000-2001 he teaches at the School of Design of
Politenico di Milano.
By 2004 to 2015 he has been a member of the Univesity Professors board for the Ph.d
course in Interior and Exhibition Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano.
